FAQ's

Do you tutor A Level?
I can support AS Level (Year 12) confidently, as it builds directly on the GCSE content I teach every day. For A Level Year 13, the content becomes significantly more advanced and requires deeper, specialist preparation. Because my teaching experience has focused on GCSE and AS Level, I don’t currently offer full A Level Year 13 tutoring. If you’re looking for help with AS Level, I’m very happy to support that. If you need full A Level (Year 13) tutoring, I can point you toward tutors who specialise in the second‑year content.

Do you offer one-off sessons or just regular weekly sessions?
I do not currently offer one-off sessios simply because this becomes more difficult to co-ordinate. Having regular weekly meetings means content can be developed over time and a better working relationship developed, which would not happen with one off sessions.

How do payments work?
Once a regular day and time has been arranged a payment link will be sent to you. This link will be the same for the duration of tutoring and will already have the amount set into the link. This means all you need to do is click the link and follow the instructions.

Do you offer in-person tutoring?
As a general rule, no. This creates additional travel costs and time constraints which become more difficult to organise. If this is something you are specifically interested in then I am more than happy to have a conversation around how I could best support you, or provide contact to other tutors who may offer in-person tutoring.

Do parents/carers need to sit in on lessons?
This is down to the parent and student. Generally most students prefer to work independently but this is totally up to you and your child. If you want to check on how your child is getting on, or what is happening in their tutoring sessions, they are all recorded and then attached to the event on google calendar. You can also e-mail me if you want to find out about how they are progressing.

How do you tailor lessons to different students?
This primarily comes from building a good relationship with the student to get to know what they are like, and then using my experience as a teacher to identify whether they need a boost in confidence, greater challenge, or a different explanation for any given topic. This informs how I deliver the content and the level of complexity/problem solving involved in the content we are covering. 

Do you follow the school curriculum when tutoring?
This is often dependent on how the student wants the sessions to run. I have had students who have e-mailed me earlier in the week informing me what they would like to cover, and others where they have provided the schools scheme of work to support my planning. Both of these are absolutely fine and I am happy to switch between the two as required.

Can you help with specific exam boards?
As noted above, I am happy to tailor the content towards a specific exam board, as a lot of the content overlaps. My experience is currently working towards the EdExcel GCSE qualification so can support more with the specific examination technique and understanding the specifics of the mark scheme for EdExcel, but can support students with the content of the other exam boards.

Do you set homework?
Generally no. There might be times when a student has wanted to look over a specific topic that they then need more independent practise on, but I wouldn't prescribe this as homework. Kids have already got enough to do without adding extra homework from tutoring.

What happens if I can't attend a session?
Life doesn't always go like clockwork, so in the event that you are unable to attend a session, please provide at least 24 hours notice and we can either re-arrange the session to a mutually agreed time, or the session can be cancelled at no charge. If less than 24 hours notice is given, it will be at my discretion to decide whether to charge for the session.

What equipment does my child need?

• Laptop or tablet - something with a stable internet connection and a display large enough to be able to read what is on the shared screen. The sessions are hosted on google meet which can be accessed on any web browser. No specific or additional software is required.

• Something to write with and something to write on - most students don't have a graphics tablet to write on the screen efficiently, so having something easier to work on helps.

• Scientific calculator - an essential bit of equipment for secondary level maths, as they have far better functionality than a phone or computer calculator. It's also really helpful to ensure that students know how to work their specific model of calculator as they are all slightly different.

• A quiet space - somewhere that they can focus without distractions.

Do you use cameras?
No, cameras are not used as this means students can feel more relaxed when tutoring as they are not "on show" on the screen. It also minimises any potential safeguarding risks to keep both myself and your child safe.

What happens if there are technical issues during a lesson?
If there is a technical issue which means the session is interrupted, the first thing that will happen is we will try to get the session running again and continue as normal. In the event that the session is interrupted and is unable to be resumed, then I will attempt to offer an alternative time to make up the remainder of the session, however, I haven't had this happen yet in the three years I have been tutoring.

Do you record lessons?
All sessions are recorded on google meet and are automatically added to that weeks even meeting on a google calendar. This means all recordings should be available within an hour after the session has finished (dependent on googles server capacity) to be reviewed at any point up to a year after the session takes place.
